We love highlighting Irene’s alumni and the unique paths they create through massage therapy. Each graduate brings personal experiences, talents, and goals to the profession, using their education to serve others in ways that are entirely their own.

For Francis Walker, the journey began at age 16, when her mother treated her to an unforgettable mother-daughter spa day. Inspired by the peaceful experience, Francis asked the massage therapist and spa owner how she could someday enter the profession. The answer was Irene’s Myomassology Institute, a name Francis wrote in her notepad and carried in her heart for years.

Francis first pursued a career in education and became an elementary school teacher. When uncertainty surrounding teaching positions caused her to reconsider her future, she remembered Irene’s, scheduled a tour, and enrolled in the accelerated massage therapy program. She graduated in 2008 and has been practicing massage therapy ever since.

Today, Francis lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she provides nurturing, therapeutic massage and wellness services for clients seeking relaxation, renewal, and relief from stress and muscle tension. Her career has included working for massage franchises, owning and operating her own massage therapy business in Michigan, and spa events, and group wellness experiences.

Francis’s story is one of purpose, service, professional growth, and a seed lovingly planted by her mother many years ago. In this Alumni Spotlight, she shares how Irene’s prepared her for the profession, why hands-on training and body mechanics have been essential to her longevity, and what it means to use her hands, heart, and education to help others feel restored.

How has becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist changed your life personally or professionally?

Becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist has truly added another layer of purpose to my life. I have always been someone who loves helping people feel seen, supported, and cared for, and massage therapy gave me a beautiful way to do that through healing touch.

Professionally, it opened the door for me to serve people in a different way outside of education. Personally, it reminded me that my hands have purpose, my presence has value, and wellness is not a luxury…it is something people deeply need.

How did Irene’s Myomassology Institute prepare you for your career as a Licensed Massage Therapist?

Irene’s gave me the foundation, confidence, and hands-on experience I needed to step into the profession with purpose. The training was not just about learning techniques; it was about understanding the body, respecting the client, and learning how to create a safe and healing experience.

Irene’s helped me see massage therapy as both a skill and a calling. That foundation still guides the way I care for my clients today.

How did your hands-on training or student clinic experience help prepare you to work with professional clients?

The student clinic experience was one of the most valuable parts of my training. It helped me move from learning in the classroom to actually listening to real clients, understanding their needs, and building confidence with my hands.

The clinic taught me professionalism, communication, and how to adjust each session based on what the client’s body needed. That experience helped me realize that every client is different, and every massage should be intentional.

Where are you currently working as a massage therapist, and what types of clients or conditions do you commonly work with?

I moved to Raleigh, NC 3 years ago where I currently provide massage therapy services and offer wellness services for clients who need relaxation, renewal, and relief from everyday stress. When I first graduated in 2008, I worked for the various massage franchises to gain more experience and then eventually branched out to own and operate my own massage therapy business in Michigan.

Many of my clients come to me dealing with tension, stress, muscle tightness, fatigue, and the need to simply pause and take care of themselves. My style is nurturing, but therapeutic. I want clients to leave feeling lighter, calmer, and more connected to themselves.

What inspired you to pursue a career in massage therapy and holistic health?

My journey into massage therapy actually started when I was 16 years old. For my Sweet 16 birthday, my mother, Mrs. Joan Vaughn Walker, took me to a beautiful, upscale spa for a mother-daughter spa day. We were treated to massages, facials, a Vichy shower, fresh fruit, fresh juice and the whole experience was peaceful, elegant, and unforgettable.

Even at 16 years old, something about that day stayed with me. I remember asking the massage therapist, who was also the owner, what I would need to do one day if I wanted to become a massage therapist. She told me about Irene’s Myomassology Institute and said it was the best school in Michigan! I wrote it down in my little notepad and also tucked it away in my heart.

I went on to major in education and became an elementary school teacher, but I never forgot that seed my mother planted within me about self-care, wellness, and the importance of creating space to take care of yourself.

Years later, around 2007, when many teachers in Michigan were facing layoffs, that memory came back to me. I contacted Irene’s, scheduled a tour, enrolled, and before I knew it, I was in the accelerated evening program. I was not laid off after all, but by then I was already fully immersed in the program. I graduated in 2008 and have been actively working in massage therapy ever since.

My mother passed away before she was able to see me become a Massage Therapist, but I know without question that I would not have become one without her planting that seed in me as a young lady. That Sweet 16 Mother/Daughter Spa Day became so much more than a birthday gift..It became a calling, my life’s work!

What would you tell someone who is considering enrolling in Irene’s massage therapy program?

I would tell them to take the leap, but take it seriously. Massage therapy is a beautiful profession, but it is also a real profession that requires discipline, skill, compassion, and a heart for people.

Irene’s gave me a strong foundation and helped prepare me to step into this field with confidence. If you feel drawn to healing, wellness, and helping people feel better in their bodies and their lives, then Irene’s is a wonderful place to begin that journey.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a Licensed Massage Therapist?

I would tell them to follow the call, but understand the responsibility that comes with it. Massage therapy is not just about relaxation. It is about trust, professionalism, body awareness, and creating a safe space for healing.

If you are someone who truly wants to help people feel better, this career can be very rewarding. Come in ready to learn, ready to grow, and ready to use your gifts to serve others.

There have been many times when I have been called in or hired to work a couples massage, spa event, or group wellness experience alongside other therapists, and one thing is always certain: when I meet another graduate from Irene’s, there is an instant connection.

Once we introduce ourselves and realize we both graduated from Irene’s, the conversation becomes seamless because we already understand the standard we were trained under. There is a quiet confidence that comes with it.

You can look across the room at the therapist beside you and recognize the same level of skill, body mechanics, technique, professionalism, and passion that is deeply rooted in the training we received at Irene’s Myomassology Institute.

No matter what year we graduated, that foundation is recognizable. Irene’s graduates are easily identifiable because of the knowledge, care, and excellence we carry into every session. It shows in how we enter the room, how we connect with clients, how we protect our bodies, and how we honor the work.

This work is so much more than “just a massage.” It is healing. It is service. It is purpose. It is professionalism wrapped in compassion.

This is the power of Irene’s training. This is the heart of the work. This is Irene’s legacy …and I am proud to be part of it.

What does career satisfaction as a Licensed Massage Therapist mean for you?

Career satisfaction as a Licensed Massage Therapist means knowing that I am making a difference in someone’s life, one session at a time. It means using my hands, my heart, and my training to help someone feel better than they did when they walked in.

For me, it is not just about massage. It is about creating a peaceful space where people can breathe, release, and reconnect with themselves. When a client leaves feeling restored, relaxed, or relieved, that brings me real joy and reminds me why I chose this path.

What do you love most about your career as a massage therapist and the opportunity to help others?

What I love most is the transformation that happens from the time a client walks in to the time they leave. Sometimes people arrive tired, tense, overwhelmed, or carrying the weight of life on their shoulders.

By the end of the session, their breathing is different, their energy is softer, and they feel restored. That is the part I love…knowing I helped create a moment of peace, healing, and comfort for someone who needed it.

As a massage therapist, what do you do for self-care and career longevity?

As a massage therapist, I have learned that I cannot pour from an empty cup. Self-care is not just something I recommend to my clients…it is something I have to live for myself. I try to stay mindful of my body, my energy, my rest, and my boundaries because this work requires both physical strength and emotional presence.

For my own self-care, I make time for quiet moments, stretching, walking, prayer, hydration, and of course receiving massage myself when I need to reset. I also listen to my body. If I am tired, tense, or feeling overwhelmed, I try not to ignore those signs. Massage Therapy has taught me that the body speaks, and we have to pay attention before it starts screaming.

For career longevity, I believe in using proper body mechanics, protecting my hands, continuing to learn, and honoring the sacredness of the work. This is why I am still standing strong in this industry because of the body mechanics that I learned at Irene’s. Make sure you pay attention in that class! That grants us longevity and sustainability. This profession is a gift, but it also requires balance. I want to continue serving clients for many years, so I have to care for myself with the same compassion and intention that I give to others.
