Meet Irene’s graduate Jen Duval, a Licensed Massage Therapist who has spent more than 26 years building a career on her own terms. From medical massage, auto accident rehabilitation, and hospice care to spas, mobile massage, and advanced specialty training, Jen has experienced nearly every side of the profession.
Massage therapy gave Jen more than a career she loves. It provided the flexibility and financial stability to raise her children while continuing to do meaningful work that helps others heal.
Today, she travels the country in her camper van, practicing massage therapy in multiple states and living a life filled with purpose, freedom, and adventure.
Jen’s journey is a wonderful reminder that there is no single definition of success. What type of massage therapy career path have you chosen — private practice, spa, wellness center, medical or chiropractic setting, sports massage, mobile massage, teaching, or another path?
I have worked in every facet of massage therapy in my 26 years as a therapist. I have worked in medical, spa, with auto injuries, hospice work, mobile, you name it, I’ve done it. My favorite was working with auto injuries and hospice because I know I am truly making a difference in their healing and lives. It’s incredibly rewarding work.
Can you share a meaningful client success story that shows the positive impact of massage therapy?
Before I left Michigan to travel the country to live a nomadic lifestyle, I mainly worked on auto injury cases. I had some of those clients for more than 15 years. I developed a close and special relationship with them. It was very hard to leave them when it was time for me to explore the country. I know I had a significant impact on their healing because many of them never wanted to see another therapist if it wasn’t me.
What do you love most about your career as a massage therapist and the opportunity to help others?
I love that I have been able to maintain this career for over 26 years. It’s been the only job I’ve ever had. It has given me a very flexible schedule, allowing me to raise my children. Now that they are adults, I live in a camper van and can work in many different states while still earning good money. Helping others heal remains my top priority.
Did Irene’s career support, licensing guidance, or job placement assistance help you after graduation? If so, how?
Irene’s has helped me with job placement and, especially, with licensing support for out-of-state questions several times over the years. I travel around the country, living full-time in my camper van. I am licensed in four states. Irene’s definitely helped me jumpstart that process.
What massage therapy specialties, continuing education classes, or advanced training have helped you grow your skills and build your career?
I am certified in Oncology Massage, Myofascial Release, Prenatal Massage, and other modalities. I am also Ashiatsu-certified, a barefoot massage technique that enables me to use my feet and body weight to provide deep, gliding compression. I genuinely love this method because it reduces pressure on my hands and arms, extending career longevity. It is excellent for deep pressure without the pokey sensation often associated with elbows.
As a massage therapist, what do you do for self-care and career longevity?
Yoga and taking rest days are important for self-care. Currently, when I seek a new position, I tell employers I need two days off in a row for proper rest.
How would you describe your career journey since graduating from Irene’s Myomassology Institute?
Being a massage therapist has been an incredible journey. I’ve touched the lives of thousands of people from all walks of life. It has given me a wonderful, flexible lifestyle, allowing me to set my own hours while supporting myself financially. With a career in massage therapy, you can make anything happen. Now, I am happy living in my camper, traveling, and working in different states.
